Explicaţie: Una dintre cele mai mari legende nerecuperate, ale spaţiului cosmic este sistemul satelitar de tip Pripon (Tether). Pripon-urile sunt materiale lungi, care ţin promisiunea de a stabiliza sateliţii, de a genera energie electrică şi de a permite transportul facil. Eventual, cea mai ambiţioasă viziune a legăturii spaţiale este ascensorul spaţial, mediatizat de Arthur C. Clarke, astfel, se construieşte o bandă care uneşte solul, cu orbita geosincronică, a Planetei noastre Pământ. O problemă este forţa. Este dificil să realizezi o legătură lungă şi utilă, care să nu se blocheze. Fotografia de aici este desfăşurarea sistemului satelitar Pripon, de tip Tethered 1 (TSS-1), de către naveta spaţială Altantis, în anul 1992. Ca şi alte legături testate, din nefericire, TSS-1, nu a reuşit să-şi respecte promisiunea, deşi, au fost învăţate multe lecţii valoroase.

and allowing easy
transportation.
Possibly the most ambitious
vision
of the space tether is the space
elevator
popularized by Arthur
C. Clarke,
where a tether
is constructed
that connects the ground to geosynchronous
orbit.
One problem
is strength - it is difficult to make a long
useful tether
that does not snap. Pictured
here is
the deployment of the Tethered
Satellite System 1
(TSS-1) by the space
shuttle Altantis
in 1992. Like other tested tethers, TSS-1
failed
to live up to its promise, although many valuable
lessons
were learned.
